Why Seeds Need Darkness, Moisture, and Warmth: The Science Behind Germination
Most germination guides hand you the same three rules: keep it dark, keep it damp, keep it warm. Far fewer bother to explain why those three, in that order of importance. And that gap matters, because once you understand what is going on inside that little shell, the whole process stops feeling like a superstition you have to perform correctly and starts feeling like something you can read. You stop counting days on a calendar and start watching the seed itself.
So here is what a cannabis seed is actually doing when it wakes up, written for adults growing where it is legal.
A seed is alive, but asleep
A mature, viable seed is a tiny dormant embryo wrapped in a hard protective coat, with a small packed lunch of stored food tucked in beside it. That dormancy is not laziness; it is a survival strategy honed over a very long time. In the wild, a seed that sprouted in dry soil, or in the wrong season, or in a cold snap, would burn through its food reserve and die before it ever reached the light. So seeds evolved to stay firmly shut until the surroundings signal a genuine chance of making it.
Germination is the moment that gamble pays off. And the three triggers you control on a kitchen counter are the same ones the seed evolved to wait for in the ground. You are not forcing anything. You are simply telling the seed, in a language it already understands, that the coast is clear.
Moisture: the switch that starts everything
Water is the first and most important signal, full stop. When a bone-dry seed meets water, it pulls it inward through a process called imbibition. The cells swell and rehydrate, the coat softens, and crucially this wakes up enzymes that had been sitting frozen and idle inside the seed, sometimes for years. Those enzymes get straight to work breaking the seed's stored starches and proteins down into the simple sugars and amino acids the embryo can actually burn as fuel.
None of that chemistry can run without water. But here is the catch that explains the single most common germination failure I see, and it trips up careful growers more than careless ones. The seed also needs oxygen. As it rehydrates it starts to respire, which is how it releases the energy locked in those broken-down food stores, and respiration burns oxygen. Soggy, waterlogged conditions push the air out of the soil or the paper towel and effectively drown the embryo. It suffocates in the very water that was supposed to wake it.
That is why every honest guide repeats the word moist, not wet, almost to the point of nagging. You want the medium damp enough to feed the chemistry but airy enough to let the seed breathe. If you have ever wondered why a seed went mushy and brown instead of sprouting, this is almost always the answer, and it is the same balance that trips people up later on with their seedlings too.
Warmth: the speed control
Germination is a cascade of enzyme reactions, and enzymes are fussy about temperature. Too cold and they barely move, so the seed sits there for a week or two, doing very little, growing steadily more likely to rot before it ever cracks. Too hot and you start cooking the embryo or driving off the moisture before the taproot can establish.
For cannabis, the practical sweet spot is roughly 21–26 °C (70–78 °F). In that band the enzymes work briskly, the embryo respires efficiently, and the taproot usually pushes out within two to five days. This is not folklore. A study on the closely related industrial hemp pinned down the cardinal temperatures for the species: germination essentially stalls near a base of about 3.4 °C, runs fastest around an optimum near 30 °C, and shuts down above roughly 43 °C (Cannabis sativa germination research, MDPI). Sitting your seeds in the low-to-mid twenties keeps you comfortably inside the productive part of that curve with a safe margin on both ends.
The other thing temperature research keeps underlining is stability. Wild daily swings, warm on the windowsill by afternoon and chilly by 3 a.m., disrupt the process and stretch it out. A cheap propagation mat earns its keep here, not because it makes things hot but because it holds a steady, gentle warmth that turns a stubborn week-long wait into a tidy three-day pop. Warmth does not replace moisture; it sets the pace at which the moisture-driven chemistry runs.
Darkness: less critical, but still helpful
Darkness is the condition people fuss over the most and understand the least. The honest truth is that cannabis seeds are not strongly light-dependent for germination, so a seed left in the light will often sprout perfectly well. You can relax about the occasional peek under the towel.
But darkness still earns its place for practical reasons. A covered, shaded setup loses far less moisture to evaporation, so it holds that all-important dampness steady without you having to re-wet it constantly. It also keeps the temperature more even, and it mimics the one place a taproot expects to find itself: buried in soil, in the dark, reaching down. Give the seed those familiar cues and it gets on with the job instead of hesitating.
Then the relationship flips completely. The moment the seedling breaks the surface and unfurls its first true leaves, the food store is nearly spent and it needs light, urgently, to start photosynthesising for itself. Get it under gentle light promptly at that point. Leave it in the dark even a day too long and it will stretch into a pale, leggy stem straining toward any glow it can find, and a weak stem at this stage haunts the whole grow.
Reading the seed instead of the calendar
This is the real payoff of understanding the mechanism: troubleshooting gets quick and unemotional, because each symptom points straight back to one of the three conditions.
- Not cracked after five days? Usually too cold or too dry, rarely defective. Warm it up and check the moisture before you write it off.
- Went mushy, soft, or brown? Too wet and starved of oxygen. Ease off the water next time; aim for damp, not dripping.
- Cracked but the taproot stalled? Often a temperature swing or a towel that dried out mid-process. Hold conditions steady.
- Pale, stringy sprout reaching upward? It is desperate for light, right now. Move it under a gentle source today.
- Nothing at all after ten days, conditions were good? This one may simply be a dead or non-viable seed, which is a storage and seed-age question more than a germination one.
Note. A seed that takes six or seven days is slow, not failed. The seeds growers most often lose are the ones they fussed over, poked, re-soaked, and dug up to "check" until the fragile taproot snapped. Patience is a technique.
If you want to put all this into practice, the paper-towel method and a simple DIY humidity dome are really just clever ways of delivering these same three conditions in balance and then leaving the seed alone.
Darkness, moisture, and warmth are not magic words to be chanted in the right order. They are the three things that let a dormant embryo drink, fuel itself, and grow. Get them in balance, keep your hands off the root, and biology takes care of the rest. It has had a very long time to practise.
